august garden | on my mind

"A child kicks his legs rhythmically through excess, not absence, of life. Because children have abounding vitality, because they are in spirit fierce and free, therefore they want things repeated and unchanged. They always say, “Do it again”; and the grown-up person does it again until he is nearly dead. For grown-up people are not strong enough to exult in monotony. But perhaps God is strong enough to exult in monotony. It is possible that God says every morning, “Do it again” to the sun; and every evening, “Do it again” to the moon. It may not be automatic necessity that makes all daisies alike; it may be that God makes every daisy separately, but has never got tired of making them. It may be that He has the eternal appetite of infancy; for we have sinned and grown old, and our Father is younger than we."

Just a thought to leave you with as I pack one last bag and attempt to find that one last bit of space in a loaded car bound for Kansas City. I hope you have enjoyed the August flowers with me this week. I've been soaking them up in all their incredible, so-not-monotonous beauty and praying that the rains continue to pour daily on my little garden. It would be really nice to come home to plants that are still alive and blooming. I don't think I'll be too worried about it over the next couple of weeks though. I will be much too busy reveling in the time with my family, taking thousands (oh yes, I'm planning for thousands) of pictures and probably enjoying entirely too much Blue Bell ice cream. Vacation, here we come. Garden, hang in there!

  1. Kelli, Shawn, Tristan, Kenna and Kate: Have a wonderful time with W.M., Lexie, Christy, Jon, Lilly, Thad, Beau, Lisa, Brian, Josiah, and Nathan. Wow, what an incredible family. I can't wait to see all the pictures -- on your blog, on Shutterfly, on FaceBook, and eventually onto my computer for the Day family annual slide show. I'll miss you while you're gone.

  2. KC here we come! (I said a little farewell to my pentunias this morning - I'm sure they'll be dead when we get back. But totally worth it.)

  3. Thanks Sharon! I love your slideshows!

Christie, I have sprinklers on timers, the neighbor girl who is watching the dog as back-up for the plants, the neighbor boy who will mow as back-up for the back-up and my friend down the street, Christy, as back-up-back-up-back-up.
    SURELY SOMETHING WILL SURVIVE?!

    obsessed. I know.
